Dear listeners and readers of Soundville,
We continue listening to and enjoying the music of Love Ghost, and he keeps surprising us! Every new release of Love Ghost is something absolutely unique, something that allows you to think and discover interesting ideas and concepts. Our regular readers have already listened to the musician’s previous album. And for those who are getting to know the music of Love Ghost for the first time, a big discovery awaits you, one that can show you in a new way what rock music and art can be. Love Ghost crafts alt rock infused with many shades, punk grit, grunge textures, commercial polish, stripped down piano ballads, and even elements of dark electronics. He grinds freedom and love through his creative blender, and what comes out are unforgettable releases. ‘Gas Mask Wedding’ is one of the strongest examples of that approach.

The record features 16 tracks, including 4 bonus pieces that expand the story. Each one reflects the struggles of life, difficult paths, hard fought decisions, and, at the center, love. Even the very title ‘Gas Mask Wedding’ points to the album’s core concept. Picture a dystopian world. Who says love could not exist there? It would persist, but under different laws, in harsher circumstances. Here, love is painted against the backdrop of resistance, the wounds inflicted by society, inner voices, bittersweet attachments, and even weddings in gas masks. All of this comes together in ‘Gas Mask Wedding’. So, I suggest starting with ‘Gas Mask Wedding’, and I want to point out a few of the most striking tracks on the album that, for me, opened up a completely new world.
This became a really significant experience for me, and I would like to share it with you. In Love Ghost’s music, the lyrics and the way the songs are written matter a lot. The thing is, apart from the strong arrangements, the words themselves carry huge importance. For some other artists, it can just be about a nice image or a cover, but when we talk about Love Ghost, it is the lyrics that mainly shape his universe. The album begins with ‘Car Crash’, a very powerful and accessible piano ballad with incredible emotionality and profound words. It is in such personal tracks that Love Ghost’s melodramatic side truly shows itself. ‘Car Crash’ is a ballad about broken relationships, fragility, and vulnerability, which lets you look behind the mask of Love Ghost and hear his music from a more personal perspective.
Then already in the second track, ‘Scrapbook’, the rock spirit and energy of Love Ghost appear, the very things that make him stand out among others. This track is a joint work of Love Ghost and The Skinner Brothers. ‘Scrapbook’ brings together all the experiences and stories of the last few years, broken hearts, new paths, losses, and victories. It is a very bright and energetic rock song that immediately stays in your mind and is hard to forget. Grooving alt rock with powerful drums and stunning vocals takes over every second of the track ‘Left On Read’. Almost as soon as ‘Left On Read’ begins, you want to sway, follow its rhythm, and move with the beat. That’s exactly what I did. And that guitar line! God, it felt genuinely refreshing.

You know, in Love Ghost’s music there’s something that hits the mark right away, something that shakes the atmosphere, heats the air, and still, ‘Left On Read’ sounds very personal. I’m sure it’s because of the excellent lyrics and the themes that Love Ghost chooses to write about. For example, in ‘Left On Read’ the musician opens up all the dark corners of the feeling of abandonment, and I’m certain that plenty of listeners will connect with it, because they know that state all too well. Then, with ‘Sand Castles’, I caught this unmistakably grunge mood. There’s something in it that recalls freedom, that wild grunge spirit of the nineties, but flavored with the commercial brightness of Zach Goode’s vocals from Smash Mouth. I love how the styles and genres shift in ‘Sand Castles’: it begins as grunge, but by the chorus transforms into modern pop-inflected punk rock. It’s a perfect party track, with vocals that are stylish and radiant. And it’s the perfect song about how fleeting dreams and youth can be.
Make sure to turn the volume up for track eight, ‘Hallucinations’, because you’ll need it to feel the full energy, freedom, and sonic force of Love Ghost. ‘Hallucinations’ is the ideal track to throw off the weight of difficulties and remember youth, ambition, and that fearless edge of adolescence. It’s a daring, sun-soaked collaboration between Los Angeles natives Reverie and Love Ghost. You can feel that in every beat, in the vocals, and in the very mood of the track. I have to admit, this is one of my favorite songs on the album. There is something elusive and magnetic about it. So, how about a bit of mysticism and something supernatural? The track ‘Spirit Box’ is a relaxed song with soft piano and incredibly gripping harmonies that almost trick your expectations. You know, that’s the interesting elusiveness of the track, like a ghost. Just when you think the melody is about to rise, it shifts into a completely new sound, like the feeling of someone standing behind you. You look back, and there’s no one there. Then ‘A Message from Finn’ begins, and you know, it’s a pretty bold and very important choice.

The thing is, ‘A Message from Finn’ brings you closer to the album, creating the feeling that it’s a message from a best friend who, through music, shares their sometimes most intimate thoughts that could never be spoken in other circumstances. Maybe that’s why the next bonus tracks sound like scenes after the credits or tracks expanding an already known universe. I like how easy and soft the track ‘Falling Down Bonus’ sounds. It’s a light alt rock song about lost love in a 90s style, with changing rhythms and harmonies. If you want a track just to enjoy bright rock and modern vocals, then ‘Falling Down Bonus’ is your choice. The final tracks ‘SOVIET GHOST Bonus’ and ‘The Masochist Bonus’ end on a very strong and sobering note. The heavy ‘SOVIET GHOST Bonus’ with its thick pulsing rhythm, distorted vocals, and dark guitars and bass tells the story of a lost ghost of a Soviet soldier, aimlessly stuck in the ruins of a fallen empire. Meanwhile, the final track, ‘The Masochist Bonus,’ ends the release by changing sound, style, and theme once again.
The vocals are distant, the arrangement steps forward, and the feeling of confinement, misunderstanding, and something that should remain behind closed doors becomes almost tangible. These awesome bonus tracks drop hints for the attentive listener that there’s plenty more great alt rock ahead, with vivid lyrics and themes that clearly will never run dry for Love Ghost. With such variety, every listener on the planet can find a song in the artist’s collection that resonates the most. Wow, that was incredibly cool.
