Drifting Intervals by De Moi

Dear listeners and readers of Soundville,

If you haven’t listened to mesmerizing ambient music in a while, something that slowly seeps into your consciousness, turns everything upside down, and lets you disconnect from reality, then you should put on ‘Drifting Intervals’ by Czech ambient artist Vojtech Vesely, who releases music under the alias De Moi. Do you know what stands out first in ‘Drifting Intervals’? It’s how the sound of its 11 tracks literally stretches through time, blurring the boundaries between sound and silence, beginning and end. Imagine that the music here isn’t a set of melodies or even familiar ambient textures but rather a slow process of dissolution, where one note clings to another, glides, disappears, and returns in a new form.

For this new release, De Moi drew inspiration from giants like William Basinski, Terry Riley, and Robert Fripp, but added his own unique touch to their well-known techniques, artificial reverb that stretches the sound almost to infinity. The foundation is simple yet effective: De Moi uses tape delays and deep reverberation to transform intervals, combinations of notes, into something entirely new. There’s a hint of Pauline Oliveros’ ‘Deep Listening’ in this, but unlike Basinski’s ‘Disintegration Loops’, where the sound gradually crumbles, here it elongates, filling imaginary miles. That’s why listening to ‘Drifting Intervals’ creates the impression that De Moi has composed music for spaces that exist only in the imagination, where the world remains intangible.

I love that ‘Drifting Intervals’ is an album that doesn’t develop linearly. It doesn’t “begin” or “end” in the usual sense. I suggest you start listening right now with the track ‘I’ and feel how the light veil of long, drawn-out ambient wraps around every moment of time, emotion, and your very existence. This same atmosphere continues through the following tracks up to ‘III’. The sound unfolds from swirling low waves into higher tones, and I’m absolutely thrilled by the way a note that played at the very beginning can return minutes later, transformed, as if it had drowned in an endless stream of sound and changed within it. Incredibly light, airy, and gentle.

In ‘IV’, ‘V’, ‘VI’, you can feel a range of sounds smoothly flowing into one another, hypnotizing and bringing a sense of serenity. The higher frequencies seem to stretch, while the lower ones expand, becoming voluminous, vibrating waves that send shivers down your spine. I’d even say this movement of sound is perfect for spiritual practices. A deeply immersive and enlightening experience.

‘Drifting Intervals’ is an album you want to listen to as a whole, without pauses, just to experience how the sound slowly evolves. I’m in love with the sections in ‘VIII’ and ‘IX’, for me, these tracks reach the peak of their dynamics, offering a culmination, resolution, tranquility, and the infinite motion of sound. That’s why in the final ‘XI’, the melody seems to bloom, taking on a metaphorical breath, forming its own life, its own worlds, and a cosmic resonance of stretched time. It’s a very poetic ending to the album, which at the same time isn’t an ending in the usual sense of the word. This section leaves a pleasant sense of fulfillment and a desire to listen to the release again. You hear it too, don’t you? And if you enjoy albums you can simply put on and dissolve into, this release is definitely for you. Don’t forget to add these tracks to your playlist so you can always find moments of peace and calm in this fast and chaotic world. I love it!

Hey, De Moi! Thank you for releasing such incredible ambient music. I’m amazed by your technique and approach to this release. Every note, every sound seems to mystically merge with the present moment while weaving in past instants, stretched, transformed, turned into something entirely new. There’s something truly cosmic about it. I can hear how much inspiration, care, effort, and love you’ve poured into ‘Drifting Intervals’. It resonates in the vibrations that flow through the space around me, bringing comfort. I found myself completely inspired and hypnotized by your release. I just want to close my eyes, leave your album on repeat, and drift through my own subconscious, who knows where this journey might take me 🙂 I’m definitely going to share your album with everyone, let them hear this flawless music too, right? I adore it and I want more, oh yesss

With much love,
Soundville
