Gothic Dreaminess in the New Album ‘Conversations with the Moon’ by Kitty Coen

Dear listeners and readers of Soundville,

Many of us have long loved the country genre with its atmosphere of endless warm sunsets and its amazing diversity of sound, and it’s in this genre that Kitty Coen creates unique music. However, before telling you more about her new album ‘Conversations with the Moon’, I would like to share her story with you. Kitty Coen has never fit into certain frames. Her music has always been unique and combined the warmth of country sound with dark gothic tones in the style of Tim Burton. It’s precisely this unique approach to the genre that allowed Kitty Coen to be one of those artists who are immediately memorable after the first listens of the songs.

In addition to creating Southern gothic narratives with country and the airiness of indie folk, Kitty Coen creates multiple images, and ‘Conversations with the Moon’ can be perceived as a film with its own story, atmosphere, and unique narrative. And this is a very bold decision to stand out in the country genre by mixing it with contemporary themes, ideas, and other genres. But it works, and Kitty Coen’s music is perceived as something new that you want to learn more about and reflect on with each song.

Conceptually, the album is about isolation, connection, and building a unique new world through sound, where you can escape and feel much better than in reality. This world of ‘Conversations with the Moon’ that Kitty Coen created possesses a special attraction. Believe me, when you listen to a few songs, you will immediately feel this atmosphere that will allow you to disconnect from reality and feel something completely new.

Imagine you’re watching a road movie made jointly by David Lynch and Ti West, unique and incomparable, which can only be understood subconsciously. ‘Conversations with the Moon’ fully reflects this atmosphere. The title of the release is telling, very mystical and interesting in itself, and can serve as the perfect foundation for your reflections while listening to the album. I think this becomes possible thanks to Kitty Coen’s gothic grotesque style, which adds something otherworldly and mysterious to her music, something you want to unravel, and this mystery and her individuality are revealed in each track from completely different sides.

For example, in the first track ‘tell my mother’, this feeling becomes practically tangible thanks to the dark gothic mix of strings and diversity of harmonies, over which Kitty Coen’s commercial and soft voice sounds. While in ‘illinois royalty’, a more intimate and cozy side of Kitty Coen’s music is revealed. It’s a cozy mix of country folk, but in the dynamics you can feel the lightness and grotesqueness of the gothic sound. I like that ‘illinois royalty’ is very cozy and commercial, perfect for background listening, and also if you love conceptual releases and strive to unravel their mystery, then ‘illinois royalty’ is the perfect song for this.

Imagine a night, an open window through which cool night air blows, and in this cozy nighttime atmosphere you are visited by images and reflections about life, and this is exactly the atmosphere the track ‘bright eyes’ possesses. In it, airy commercial pop sound merges with Kitty Coen’s light folk vocal, and the haziness and cozy atmosphere of the song make it ideal for easy listening. I would like to highlight ‘grave dancin”. It’s an amazing mix of gothic sound with swaying light country that best demonstrates the music and style of Kitty Coen. In ‘grave dancin” you can hear in what amazing harmony country and pop folk merge, and this is accompanied by interesting visuals that will reveal the familiar sound to you in a new way. ‘grave dancin” has a bright energetic atmosphere, immediately sticks in your consciousness, and you want to constantly listen to it on repeat. I really like the dynamics in ‘grave dancin”. It sounds very fresh and energetic, and you can never predict how the melody will unfold further. This is its strength and this is exactly what hooks you, and Kitty Coen’s vocal sounds very bright and energetic, reflecting her own unique style.

I would like to highlight the song ‘tonight’ with its cozy dark atmosphere. I incredibly like the cozy electronic pads creating a mystical atmosphere, haziness, and voluminous sound. ‘tonight’ allows you to dream, be inspired, and you know, there’s a very interesting production here that makes Kitty Coen’s music so memorable. ‘the drugs don’t work’ sounds cozy and warm, embraces you like a fluffy blanket. There’s something here of the Twin Peaks atmosphere and heavy mountain fog. The final ‘memphis man’ completes the release on a very cozy and soft wave. I like how this song leaves a light feeling of melancholy from the fact that this is the last song of the album, and on the other hand, there’s a light cyclicality here that continues with the first track. This is a very interesting move that emphasizes the dynamics of the album. The songs are constantly swaying, sometimes dynamically gaining folk rock power, sometimes dissolving in hazy folk. Impeccable!

‘Conversations with the Moon’ is a stunning album. It combines different styles, energy, and the unique conceptual sound of Kitty Coen. All of this makes the music very cozy, soulful, and at the same time definitely mystical. You can listen to ‘Conversations with the Moon’ over and over again and discover something new for yourself. On the other hand, this is a quality and pleasant album that can accompany you in completely different situations, and you’ll be able to find the perfect soundtrack for them. Be sure to subscribe to Kitty Coen, add your favorite songs to your playlist so you don’t miss even brighter music!

Hi Kitty Coen! Thank you for releasing such wonderful music. It sounds very stylish and unique. I really got a real surge of inspiration when I listened to your songs. And the final track with its bright rise and epic resolution reminds me of music from the credits. It creates a very deep cinematic feeling. While listening, I feel love and care, and these feelings fill the heart, calm you down, and create a very safe space, and that’s wonderful. I will definitely show your album to everyone. Let them also listen to such wonderful and stylish music. I love it, and I’m your fan!
