Dear listeners and readers of Soundville, imagine a quiet walk under a night sky filled with stars. It seems like nothing special, yet within just a few minutes you can relax, clear your thoughts, think about everything in the world, and later keep remembering that beautiful and mysterious starry sky. That’s exactly what I felt when I first heard the music of Vanna Blue. The singer creates a light pop sound mixed with alt rock and indie rock, gentle and calming. But the real magic of her music is that Vanna Blue sets the mood and stays in your memory for a long time.
Her debut EP ‘JoyCry’ consists of only six tracks. But simplicity and minimalism are surprisingly intertwined with the deep meaning embedded in each song. The artist Vanna Blue is from Denver and has already managed to win the hearts of devoted listeners with her intimate lyrics. The idea to release the EP ‘JoyCry’ came back in the difficult year of 2019. The pandemic and Vanna Blue’s personal experiences set the main theme. Perhaps that’s why, while listening to the EP, a feeling of melancholy prevails in the soul. It gives a chance to move through personal experiences that naturally lead to inner growth, development, positive change.

There is an unseen and very strong link running between the songs on this EP. The full listening time reaches about 25 minutes, and this works as a powerful move. In this warm and compact space the sense of happiness comes through with special clarity. Vanna Blue shapes a personal world within these 25 minutes, opening it from track to track. I want to speak about every song, each one vivid and emotional, each one adding to the next. Are you ready? Take a pause, and we begin!
The opening track ‘Back and Forth’ captivates with graceful, flowing guitar lines. The vocal delivery carries a fragile, slightly wavering tone. A sense of emotional entanglement emerges, as if Vanna Blue moves through her own feelings and thoughts with careful steps. The inner journey unfolds through dim terrain, each movement cautious, each moment driven by a desire to find a clear path forward.
The second track ‘Pheromones’ arrives with a stronger emotional charge. The music builds a steady pulse, and the bright chorus rises above the verses with confident energy. The presence of pheromones comes through in both romance and sound itself. A sudden spark bursts open, an amazing moment that leaves a clear impression. The track carries magnetic power, and, in my view, it stands among the most striking pieces on the EP, fully claiming the place of my personal favorite. I like ‘Black and Blue,’ which matches its predecessor in intensity. Compared to the first track, the vocals feel more piercing here. The guitar riff at the end stands out, creating a sense of calm and dreaminess.
The next track, ‘Tides,’ strikes with an amazing combination of slow rhythm and multilayered textures, successfully complementing each other. For me, it creates the feeling of a rollercoaster ride: sometimes I rushed down a steep drop, sometimes climbed very slowly upward in anticipation of a new flight. You know, I as if was in constant anticipation of the next sharp turn and drop, and it is incredibly gripping. The sound of the guitars in places turns into an echo, and the voice sounds as if in the background. In my view, a very unusual track, reflecting the character of Vanna Blue herself.
‘Closer’ stands in contrast to the previous tracks. It’s a more lyrical song, devoted to tender emotions. While listening, you can actually feel a kind of spiritual intimacy with the music and with the performer herself. The vocals are calm, lyrical, and dreamlike. For some reason, it brings to mind an image of a sunset over the sea, you know? It’s an intriguing mix of aching beauty, wistfulness, and cinematic melancholy! Amazing!

The final ‘FMHU’ attracted my attention primarily with its mysterious title. Even before listening, I anticipated something truly strong and unusual. You know how it happens when you encounter something extraordinary and can’t tear yourself away from that anticipation? And all the sensations were confirmed. The soft overflows of guitars and keyboards, the airy vocals of Vanna Blue, and the warm bass created that cozy feeling of freedom in a rock‑indie embrace. Undoubtedly, Vanna Blue decided to leave a so‑called open ending, and she succeeded in doing it beautifully.
The EP ‘JoyCry’ was released under the label Noon Records – as always, impeccable quality. However, personally me this time the vocals of the performer hooked more than the musical component and arrangements. Vanna Blue performs in the role of a storyteller of an interesting story, where all attention is riveted to the plot and the voice. During listening, the soul became light. And already after listening to ‘JoyCry’ a pleasant aftertaste is clearly felt. Of course, a special atmosphere is supported by bright guitar insertions. The music is in tune with the voice, supports the overall mood. The EP ‘JoyCry’ indeed possesses duality, which is emphasized in the title – JoyCry. A gentle introduction, a vivid central section, and an emotional finale, followed by a sense of calm. After the surge of intense feelings, there comes release and healing… leaving the soul light and at peace. You felt it too, right? I believe this is just the beginning for Vanna Blue. I’m sure a second EP, equally striking, will arrive in the near future. For now, the first one invites repeated listening and enjoyment!
Hey Vanna Blue! Thank you for releasing such beautiful music! I truly felt like I left Earth and drifted somewhere into another space while listening to your EP. It feels deeply personal and intimate, something you want to hold onto in the act of creation and come back to again. ‘JoyCry’ is full of mood, intimate lyrics, and emotions that felt very familiar to me. Maybe that’s why I connected so deeply with your sound. It was amazing! Keep making more of this wonderful music! I will definitely share ‘JoyCry’ with everyone so they can enjoy this wonderful music too. I adore it and I want more. I’m your fan!
With much love,
