Sometimes I come across tracks that are very quiet but at the same time very loud. Not in a bad sense, though — I mean that they seem to creep inside you and then stay there, deep and for a long time. ‘Lovers Always Lose’ by Tessa Rae is exactly that kind of case. It’s the lead single from her upcoming EP Pearl. The first thing that grabs you is the atmosphere. The song wraps you in a dense, calm sound with muted melodies and a slow but confident rhythm that keeps nudging you to start swaying from side to side. Tessa Rae’s voice, meanwhile, is as sensual as it gets. There’s no fuss in it, no unnecessary details, and certainly no falseness. It adds a great deal to the mood.
I also absolutely loved the idea behind the song and its essence: the line lovers always lose it all for love says it better than anything else — lovers always lose everything for the sake of love. Tessa explores the line between devotion and self-destruction, and she does it with remarkable elegance.
Anyway, you should definitely give it a listen. I think you, like me, will love it a lot.
