Some songs only come together once you stop watching the clock. “Country Butter” is one of them. Tom Sless walked away from his job, bought a van, and drove off with no real plan except to make music. That loose, unhurried feeling bleeds into every second of this new single.
It reads as easy, sun-soaked indie pop on first listen is a song about summer, about falling for someone. But the production tells a different story.
What began as just acoustic guitar and bass eventually picked up vintage synths and a rhythm section that leans hard into eighties rock, giving the whole thing a lot more weight than the breezy melody lets on.
Then there’s that electric guitar solo at the end — genuinely one of the best moments on the track.
“Country Butter” isn’t a one-and-done listen. There’s enough packed into the arrangement that it keeps giving something new each time you play it back.
