Ned Farr & The Good Red Road formed in New York City in 1992, building a catalogue around Farr’s songwriting and a band whose instruments extend from guitars and drums to violin, cello and keyboards. “QUANTUM,” from their fifth album, RUMINATIONS, takes that collaborative background into funk and psychedelic rock, with a breakup providing the reason to start contemplating parallel universes. That is quite a leap from wondering whether to send your ex a message.

The song’s premise has an appealing streak of emotional opportunism. Somewhere, in another possible version of events, the relationship survives. Another version of the couple gets things right. Farr gives that wish a scientific vocabulary, and the distance between the grand theory and the ordinary hurt becomes the interesting part. My reading is that the narrator has found an elaborate way to keep hope alive. Anyone who has spent an evening mentally rewriting a conversation will recognise the impulse.
