Northern California has always been famous for its incredible songwriters. You could even say that it is a tradition. And Aric Coyote has continued it by releasing his fifth single, “Cradle in Your Arms.” Here, from the very first notes, you can hear how the “fragile” fingerpicked acoustic guitar part lays the foundation, leaving as much space as possible for the vocals.
I especially want to praise the dynamics of the track. The musician works with timbres extremely skilfully, contrasting the “warmth” of nylon with the “velvety” tone of the cello. Closer to the climax, strings enter, adding the depth and shade for which contemporary neofolk is loved.
The voice here sounds sincere and exposed, delivered with complete natural ease. Every phrase is filled with a light sadness, as though the artist is sharing something deeply personal. The acoustic foundation stays in the background, elegantly supporting and highlighting every intonation and giving it room to breathe.
Aric Coyote also masterfully mixes “West Coast” ease with “heartland rock” solidity. This combination creates a sound that literally envelops the listener.
Make sure to listen to it. Preferably through quality headphones, so you can catch every nuance of the bowed strings.
