Camille Cano has written a song for anyone who plans the emotional fallout before anything has even happened. “doomsday prepping” takes that particular habit of overthinking and follows it all the way down.
The opening lyric places Cano behind the wheel as a nervous driver, already picturing a crash in his mind. Then one anxious thought breeds another, and soon the mind has built an entire future.
Cano understands the process intimately. She has explained that she once dealt with anxiety by preparing for every possible bad outcome, hoping to reach disappointment before it reached her. All that preparation gradually pulled her attention away from the present.
Released on September 1, “doomsday prepping” gives those thoughts three minutes and 38 seconds to run wild.
Longtime collaborator Paul Vilas handles production, placing Cano’s distinctive voice inside a moody dreampop setting. The song carries the intimacy of a private confession, with Cano picking through her own coping mechanisms and recognising the price attached to them.
