Your New Parents bring an interest in the lives of their neighbours to their indie-rock and DIY roots. Vocalist Heather Brown Dodge, guitarist Graham Dodge, and guitarist and bassist Mark Jickling form the core of the group, whose background includes connections to the unruly world of Half Japanese. With “Hallmark Town”, they return to familiar territory and take a closer look at how a community presents itself. The title is a good provocation.

“Hallmark” carries a whole package of associations: picturesque streets, friendly faces and a reassuring ending. Put those expectations onto an actual town and things get interesting. People build lives in these places. They fall out, raise families, carry grudges and develop attachments that survive years of frustration. A town’s public image has to squeeze all that experience into something suitable for a welcome sign. “Hallmark Town” develops that conversation through a title with an immediately recognisable promise. Comfort, familiarity and belonging all have their appeal. The more compelling story concerns the people expected to uphold that image, and the complicated loyalties that keep them rooted there.
