Inside brightmoon’s Debut EP ‘First Light’: A Shoegaze Journey Through Nostalgia and Emotion

Dear listeners of stunning releases, today I want to tell you about the Los Angeles duo brightmoon, consisting of the married couple Becca and Billy Mohler, who have presented their debut five-track EP ‘First Light,’ released on the Noon Records label. Amazingly, the title of the EP First Light immediately created an inspiring mood for me: everything here is infused with nostalgia, with notes of 90s infused shoegaze, indie rock and Brit pop.

The duo has a serious background behind them. Billy Mohler, a Berklee graduate and multi-instrumentalist who has worked with such names as Dolly Parton and Lady Gaga, took on all the production duties for the record. And their joint touring with The Smashing Pumpkins clearly left its mark: the scale of brightmoon’s sound is truly impressive. And soaring above it all is Becca’s dreamy vocal, which transforms everyday frustrations into art rock poetry.

The first track ‘First Light’ is dense alt rock, with hazy shoegaze and overdriven guitars. The atmosphere incredibly captivates with its rawness and tenderness, which at the same time seize and make the head spin. The duration of ‘First Light’ is 4 minutes 33 seconds, and during this time the track unfolds, changes and incredibly captivates with its amazing sound.

The next ‘Terrified’ with lighter vibes and a softer arrangement emphasize the tenderness and lightness of the band. Airy vocals of Becca float above the melody and give a feeling of peace. I like the soft harmonies, which emphasize the unique sound of the band. A soft and light track, which undoubtedly you will like.

Do not miss ‘Almost Tragic’ with its bright harmonies and Becca’s soft vocals. This is a track that can become your favorite, with light Brit pop vibes and a soft haze in the vocals. With ‘Every Move You Make’, the dynamics of the EP change, the sound speeds up, and you know, it really captivates. Light experimentation and overdriven guitars set an incredibly groovy tone, and the vocal harmonies enhance it. Perfect! The final track ‘I Falter’ closes the release softly and warmly. With light guitars, a swaying rhythm, and warm drums. Becca’s vocals are unhurried and gentle. This creates a feeling of calm and closes the EP in a romantic and light way. Absolutely recommended!

The EP ‘First Light’ is a catharsis for the musicians themselves and an escape from reality for the listener. An EP that sounds as if it was recorded by people who know exactly what they want to say and have found the perfect form for it. For a debut, it is an impressively mature work and definitely a reason to keep following brightmoon.
